The excitement of seeing all those BMW's and other models lined
up at the start of each race was exhilarating. In addition, the
sound of the engines as the cars raced past the grand stand echoing
into the pit area was awesome; it made you want to race your own
car. I got the chance to go into the Terry Sayther pit area; this
was the highlight of the event for me. I sort of helped Terry with
a small problem, finding a nut that had come off during the race.
I found the nut. Then Debbie was nice enough to make me an honorary
pit crew pirate. I still wear my orange pirate t-shirt proudly.
Between races many of us got the chance to ride with Terry in his
truck around the track. I think Terry forgot he wasn't racing on
this lap as he explained and performed the various maneuvers a driver
would make at each turn of the track. You could get the feel of
the racetrack even in the truck.
Terry didn't win the race that day but as stated in the article
he would be named Champion of the E-Modified division for 2006.
The only championship won by a 2002 beating out a couple of E21s.
Way to go Terry! And Congratulations pirates!
A long time chapter member and supporter, Terry has been racing
for over 7 years. He has traveled around the world and participated
in many infamous races such as the La Carrera Panamericana and the
24-hour LeMons (pronounced lemons) at Altamont Raceway in California.
Terry and his pirates have won his class as long as the car lasted
the whole race but not the actual race since there are so many newer
cars in the race. No race is too big or too small for Terry. From
racing on the international level at the La Carrera all over the
Mexico countryside to tooling around the Texas Hill Country competing
in Fun Rally's on the local circuit. Terry's favorite racetrack
is the Barber in Alabama; he says "it is like a golf course
with a racetrack on it. They even charge you by the square foot
for any grass you might tear up during the race". But Terry's
favorite race is the 2002 Octoberfest because "there were a
lot of 2002's in the race". Terry's favorite car to race is
his 2002, while his favorite car to drive is an E30 M3. To gear
up for this year's LeMons races, Terry and the pirates are "taking
a parts car and turning into a racecar". Each car in this race
can't have more than $500 spent on it. As always you can visit Terry
and the pirates at their shop in Austin, they will take good care
of you and your BMW.
