Here in Texas we
have a saying: 'Too much power' is power you can't control;
'Not enough power' is anything less. The E30 M3 is one of
the best cars ever made; it is supremely well balanced and
easily controlled under almost any conditions. Obviously it
doesn't have enough power.
This is no revelation; many early M3 owners have wished
for more low rpm torque and more top-end power. Even the
BMW factory agreed; they made the next generation of M3
with powerful, torquey six cylinder engines. Imagine how
great it would be to have the high-powered six-cylinder
engine from the newer M3 in the more interesting and unique
early M3 body. Well, why not have it that way? The conversion
is a proven, well worked out upgrade and gives a completely
reliable end product using all factory parts. Here's a typical
story.
Kirk McDonald, Connecticut owner of a beautiful diamond
black 1988 E30 M3, felt that, like so many others, his M3
didn't have enough power. He lived with that deficit until,
finally, one day the DME control unit failed and he said,
"That's it, that's the last straw. I'm going for it." Kirk
talked to Chris Wofford at BMP about an M50 conversion and
Chris sent him to us. Kirk decided on a 3.2 liter S52 engine
from a 1999 E36 M3 with an OBD I intake conversion on that
engine to make it breathe.
