Transit day
in which we moved our bodies and
cars south from Saltillo over the most boring, straight, flat, desert
highway to San Luis Potosi. Early in the day, as we went up the
mountain from Saltillo, the 1800 started making a bunch of noise,
which we were able to correct after jacking up the car on the side
of the road and replacing some missing bolts. We crossed the Tropic
of Cancer and officially entered the tropics, and somewhere around
there we took a break beside the road where local desert dwellers
showed us captured hawks, snakes, and other small birds and animals.
We arrived in SLP in the late afternoon to the joyous greetings
of the Jimenez family. Edgar Jimenez has been living with us for
a few months, and his father, mother, and brothers were overjoyed
to see him. Alex took us on a tour of the downtown historic district,
and then we went to a press conference where our pictures were taken
101 times and we were interviewed for the local newspaper and television.
Then we returned to the Jimenez home for a late night supper and
a fiesta in our honor. All the rest of the Pirates partied till
dawn while Terry and Debbie saved their energy by going to bed at
midnight.

'em, but we were able to hit the road again by the stroke of noon.
Just north of Mexico City, we cleverly avoided entering the city
madhouse
by diverting ourselves east onto the world's worst, most crowded
back roads. We eventually got over to Teotihuacan, one of the MOST
famous pyramid sites in all of the world. This area is also famous
for building the largest speed bumps (topes) possible---probably
the descendants of the pyramid builders. The 1800 sedan high-centered
on every single tope. The exhaust system now has an oval cross-section
where it once had round…
