Our Terry and
the Pirates La Carrera Race Team crew this year was a big one. Terry
Sayther, Debbie Stuart, Debbie's son Duncan Harris, TSA employees
Brandon "Beavis" Littleton and Marty Tualu, San Luis Potosi
native Edgar Jiminez, and Beavis's co-driver that we ended up calling
Butthead. Amazingly enough we were ready early. Our Ford was towing
a trailer with the 1958 BMW 502 on board, along with every spare
part we could think of. Our second car, a 1965 BMW 1800ti sedan,
was self-deploying---driving the whole 2500 miles to the start of
the race. All together we had three vehicles, a trailer, and 7 people,
all in place and ready to go a full hour before our scheduled departure
time. Seems impossible. Vaminos! Of
course, as we headed toward the freeway, SOMETHING had to go wrong---in
this case one of the wiper blades on the sedan disappeared into
the rain. We in the truck waited while Beavis and Butthead went
back to the shop for a replacement. Then we headed south.
Border crossing is always tense, a hold over from
the days when entering Mexico for us hippies wasn't always a sure
thing. This one was worrisome because of the sheer volume of spare
parts and tires that we were lugging along. But this crossing turned
out to be the easiest border crossing ever by anyone! Another good
omen?
Onward south to Saltillo for the night.
